23 Leg Session has robust housing bills

In the first week, over 1000 bills were introduced to the Washington State Legislature.  Habitat Washington testified in one hearing, and sat in on five others to learn more about their supporters and opponents.  One specifically we are watching is HB 1149, the Governor’s proposed $4B Bond bill which will require a vote of the people to fund this 6-year initiative.  We know we need more resources for housing, and the Housing Trust Fund is not large enough to solve the severe housing deficit causing our housing crisis.  This will be a big lift – but our crisis is real, and very much recognized this Leg. Session by the lawmakers.  Habitat could be doing so much more, if we had the capital to do it.  We can scale up and deliver on the need for more affordable homeownership units – and the bills to support the missing middle housing, to incentivise affordable housing through streamlined permitting and design review process, waiving impact fees, and land use/zoning reform will all help us get more units built.
